Created in collaboration with Hazel Eckert, Three-Star Quality Inn was installed at The Gladstone as part of the group illustration show, If These Walls Could Talk. The nostalgia of staying in 1970s-style roadside motels was our main inspiration. We distilled the feeling of each detail of these motels into a life-sized paper room where time seemed to stand still. Everything pictured, from the wall hangings to the furniture was constructed completely from paper. I designed and Hazel letter-pressed our own stationery and “do not disturb” sign. Not only that, we created a Gideon Bible to live in the bedside drawer. A favourite detail was the illuminated paper lamps that drove home the moody stillness of the installation.
